The first-generation BMW X6 M has reached an odd point in its life cycle. Examples with high mileage are no longer rare, yet some owners continue pouring money into them as if the model never left the showroom.
Finished in Carbon Black Metallic and paired with a black full Merino leather interior, the SUV recently appeared at auction after accumulating 60,000 miles, nearly 100,000 km. The final number attached to the sale was $18,100.
Viewed from the outside, the vehicle does not look stock anymore. The body received a collection of aftermarket components, including a replacement hood, a front lip, a rear diffuser, and a rear spoiler. Custom headlights were added as well, complete with red Angel Eyes.
The wheel setup follows the same direction. Large 22-inch Vorsteiner wheels sit under the arches, wrapped in Lexani tires. KW coilovers lower the stance and change the overall look of the vehicle considerably.
Inside, BMW’s original luxury-oriented formula remains easy to spot. Heated and power-adjustable front seats are joined by heated rear seats, four-zone automatic climate control, Comfort Access, rear sunshades, satellite navigation, and a rearview camera with Top View. There is also a heated steering wheel.
One detail stands out more than the others. Above the steering column sits a custom boost display. Small thing, perhaps. Still, it tells you immediately this X6 M has moved beyond factory specification.
Under the hood sits BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. The engine now works with an Akrapovic exhaust system, cat-less downpipes, and a custom ECU tune. No updated output figure was provided.
From the factory, the model carried ratings of 547 horsepower and 499 lb-ft, or 677 Nm, of torque. BMW also quoted a 0-60 mph sprint of 4.5 seconds. The equivalent metric figure shown was 97 kph.
Then there is the money side of the story.
The modification list is estimated at roughly $50,000. According to the source, the exhaust system alone accounts for around $10,000 of that amount. Those figures become even harder to ignore once you remember the vehicle originally retailed for about $100k.
Yet none of those numbers matched the auction result.
When bidding ended, the heavily modified X6 M left for $18,100. For some buyers, that figure might look risky. For others, especially those who already understand ownership costs attached to a first-generation X6 M, it probably looked difficult to ignore.
